Vegandale Presents

Toronto is officially welcoming the newly revived and generously sought after ‘Vegandale,’ located on Queen Street in the heart of Parkdale. Home to a variety of plant based eateries and Vegandale’s very own Imperative, a cruelty-free fashion hub, this vegan hot spot is creating more than just a sanctuary. I was lucky enough to experience the fine dining stylings of Chef Doug McNish at Toronto’s newly renovated Mythology, previously known as Mythology Diner. Having enjoyed Mythology in it’s earlier days (I still remember that Vegan Philly Cheesesteak) I was drooling with anticipation waiting to see what McNish had planned for his latest dining experience. And I’ll be honest, it was even better than I could have imagined. The atmosphere was stunning, the service was phenomenal, and the food… well let’s just say I will do my best to describe the incredible experience that was given.

Amuse-Bouche

As if the days leading up to our reservation at Mythology Toronto wasn’t enough anticipation; the chef begins your experience with drink service alongside ‘amuse-bouche.’ Just a taste of what’s to come. Watermelon with a tangy heat and fresh micro greens. Now we know we’re really in for a treat.

Appetizers

How could we possibly pass up on ordering the Charcuterie Board! If you’re vegan or even lactose free, you can definitely understand the “without cheese please” disappointment. Treating myself to cheese substitutes is a rare occurrence, mostly because cheese substitutes ARE A RARE OCCURRENCE! That’s why I was absolutely blown away by the Charcuterie Board at Mythology. Three types of hand crafted cheeses all thoughtfully accompanied by various sauces, pickled vegetables, freshly marinated watermelon, and sweet and savoury spiced candied pecans (I had to ask our server how these were made). All offering a multitude of flavour and texture combinations. I especially enjoyed the Beetroot & Mushroom Cheese Spread (top right) with the freshly marinated watermelon rind on crostini. It was the perfect balance of creamy, crunchy, sweet, and savoury. Another favourite was the Carrot Gravlax sprinkled with Hickory Maldon Salt; a mouth watering smokey flavour. And of course the Bacon Wrapped Jackfruit Pate on crostini - so innovative! The best part about the Charcuterie Board was being able to really take our time exploring the different flavours, and admiring the detail of the Chef’s work. If you’re planning a night of cocktails and sharables, this is the perfect route to go!

Along side our tasty platter, we were served the Calamari; a light cornmeal coating over king oyster mushrooms with micro greens, house made tartar sauce, dill, and lemon to taste. It has been a long time since I’ve had calamari, but I’m almost certain the texture was spot on. Perfectly tender on the inside with a cornmeal crisp and zesty garnish, this dish really satisfied a craving before the main event!

Entrees

Prepare yourselves because I cannot say enough good things about these mains. For our first entree, the chef prepared handmade Mushroom Ravioli with a Porcini Cream Sauce. Yes that is correct. Handmade vegan mushroom ravioli. Where else in the city can you find this! And I promise you friends, it tastes as good as it looks. Let us take a moment to acknowledge the plating of this dish; a true work of art.

The mushroom wasn’t overpowering at all, even after we devoured our mushroom calamari appetizer. The cream sauce lightly coated the ravioli for a perfect balance of flavour. And the fresh baby greens offered a little refresher to compliment the richness of the noodle. The dish was even presented with a hazelnut crumb to offer a traditionally nutty parmesan flavour.

The second main was the Glazed Tofu, recommended by Nick, our expert server. Thank you Nick, because this was probably my favourite menu item of the night. I’ll be honest, even as an avid vegan cook, I tend to steer clear of silken tofu because the texture doesn’t exactly thrill me. Let’s just say, my world has officially changed for the better. No surprise - Mythology has figured out silken tofu. The tofu itself was so flavourful, hitting all of my taste buds in the best way. And then to pair it with the Crispy Sushi Rice… perfection. We’re not just talking your average ‘crispy.’ This was so well done, I’m still dreaming about it. Talk about navigating flavour and texture combinations. If you’re heading to Mythology, this is a must try! Cut open the sushi rice and let the Dashi Broth soak in. You’ll absolutely be returning to this vegan hot spot.

Dessert

Finally, to finish off our vegan experience, we indulged in Beignets. Plated with cherry compote, chocolate fondue, and a house made coconut whipped cream, the bite sized pastries were the sweetness I craved after a savoury entree. I’d like to say we were able to enjoy the chocolately goodness of the Spiced Chocolate Cake right then and there, but after licking our plates clean, that work of art was coming home in a doggy bag. Who said you can’t have gourmet cake for breakfast?

Mythology; the full experience of an intimate atmosphere; attentive and knowledgable service; and incredibly well thought out cuisine. If you’re looking for an all vegan fine dining restaurant in the city, this is your ticket. Book your reservation here! It’s time to experience the New Myth.
